120 Football Fields of Poster Board: Why Reusable Protest Signs Matter This Midterm Season

Posted by The Go!Sign on
The GoSign reusable sign kit. No poster board: Americans use 85 million tons of paper a year.

Every rally ends the same way: a pile of poster board in the dumpster. Made last night, carried for an afternoon, trashed by dinner. It happens at rallies for every cause and every candidate.

How 5 million people show up in a single day

These weren't single marches in one city. They were nationally coordinated days of action — thousands of local groups each hosting their own rally, march, or gathering on the same day, in towns and cities across the country. Organizers combine RSVPs, local headcounts, and turnout reports from every location into one national figure.

In June 2025, that model produced more than 2,100 events in a single day. Organizers estimated over 5 million participants (The Tech); independent analyses put the range at 4 to 6 million (G. Elliott Morris, IDEA).

An October 2025 wave spanned 2,700 events with roughly 7 million participants, per organizers (ACLU); independent analysts estimated 5 to 6.5 million (Morris/Xylom). By March 2026, organizers estimated 8 to 9 million across 3,300 events (organizer claim; no independent crowd-count analysis has been published for this round that we could find).

Millions of people. Thousands of locations. One afternoon each.

The math

One day · one estimate
5 million demonstrators
× 1 in 3 carrying a sign
= 1.7 million poster boards
× 4.3 sq ft each
= 120+ football fields
of single-use sign — used once, then trashed
An estimate, not a count. Every million attendees ≈ 25 football fields at that same rate.

Midterms, in brief

On Tuesday, November 3, all 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats are on the ballot (33 regular elections plus two special elections). Most states offer early voting (47, per the National Conference of State Legislatures). Check your registration, polling place, and early voting dates at vote.gov.

The Go!Sign

The Go!Sign is a reusable sign kit with 150+ press-on letters and emojis. It expands to 19″ x 24″ and folds down to a 9-inch disc. Spell out your message, peel it off, and use it again at the next rally. A reusable sign earns its keep by being used more than once, but one kit can stand in for dozens of poster boards.

The Go!Sign 2-Pack is $39.99 through the midterms ($10 off, $20 per sign), with free U.S. shipping.

Know the rules

Nearly every state restricts campaign signs near polling places, and the buffer zones vary. Check your state’s rules before bringing a sign to vote. The NCSL electioneering guide is a good place to start.
